Creating a Child Centered Approach

  • Creating a balance between individual and group needs.

  • Responding to and acknowledging children’s communications.

  • Developing positive relationships with others through supervised group work.

Enabling Autonomy and Self Control

  • Encourage young people to be responsible for their own behaviour.

  • Staff maintain clear boundaries for behaviour, so in result young people have the security and consistency.

  • Being given responsibility and independence.

On-going development of Staff Support and Training

  • NZ Tutoring staff are engaged in ongoing behaviour management and child protection training.

  • Undertake regular supervision and peer supervision when available.

  • NZ Tutoring Recognises that all staff need to build confidence and be valued which is achieved by providing the best possible training, support and feedback processes.

  • All staff agree and sign NZ Tutoring’s Behaviour Management and Safety Policy.

5. Incident Management Procedure

Where students do not, or cannot, comply with the behaviour expectations and instructions from staff, contractors and volunteers, NZ Tutoring will, as a first step:

  • Advise the student that their actions are inappropriate and provide guidance on appropriate behaviour,

  • Use positive reinforcement of favourable behaviour.

  • Where necessary, a few minutes sitting outside the class or away from the group to reflect on their behaviour will be chosen. This is referred to as “Time out”. Students will be made aware of the reasons why they have been placed into “Time out”.

A NZ Tutoring senior staff member will be available to discuss and assist with any concern a parent/caregiver may have in respect of a Student’s behaviour.

If the unacceptable behaviour persists NZ Tutoring will implement the following steps:

  • Arrange a meeting with the Client to discuss behaviour issues, with clever expectations and, if appropriate, a behaviour management plan to be agreed upon between the Student, the Client and NZ Tutoring.

If all methods fail to result in an improvement of acceptable behaviour, and in consideration of the health and safety and duty of care to the other Students, NZ Tutoring may, at their sole discretion, choose to exclude the Student from NZ Tutoring’s services. There will be no refund of fees paid in these instances.

NZ Tutoring will maintain records of all instances where Students have had to be engaged in accordance with this policy.

5. Physical Intervention Procedures

NZ Tutoring is guided by the Education (Physical restraint) Rules (2017). This legislation states that staff can use physical restraint if he or she reasonably believes that there is a serious and imminent risk to the safety of the Student or others. The physical restraint must be reasonable and proportionate in the circumstances.
